Catch the Joy!

A few weeks ago, our seminarian associate, Mike Looney, wrote in Gatherings about his experience of liminal space—a period or time of transition and uncertainty. Christian contemplative Father Richard Rohr says, “This is the sacred space where the old world is able to fall apart, and a bigger world is revealed. If we don’t encounter liminal space in our lives, we start idealizing normalcy. The threshold is God’s waiting room. Here we are taught openness and patience as we come to expect an appointment with the Divine Doctor.”

I think it’s fair to say that Christ Church is sitting very much in a liminal space. Father Manny closes out his sabbatical, I’m preparing for a new parochial assignment, Mike has transitioned on to the next phase of his education, and we’re gathering in community to discern the future of our parish. Undeniably, there is much unknown, and lots of change, on the horizon.

What hasn’t changed? The joyful, Spirit-filled current running through everything we do here at Christ Church.

After his time with us a few weeks ago, Canon Kristofer Lindh-Payne posted on Facebook that his face hurt from smiling so much. He wasn’t exaggerating, nor was he alone in this sentiment. I’ve heard this same theme in conversations with various people who engage with us. From our guest Celebrants to first-time visitors to long-time parishioners, people can’t help but find the joy here contagious.

My friends, in the times we live in, contagious joy is something to celebrate! We invite you to join us this Sunday, August 25th for our annual Parish Festival. We’ll gather to worship together at one service at 10:00 a.m., followed by a time of fellowship including food, music, activities for the kids, and a chance to learn more about Christ Church’s many fruitful ministries.

So, before the madness of back-to-school begins, let’s come together as members of the One Body to acknowledge and celebrate the powerful ways the Spirit is working through us. I hope to see you there!
